Mini-Test Answer: to give up on an idea forever

Apr. 5, 2012

Beginner Level 初级 (chūjí)

The right answer to the question is A.

Translation:

Nǐ hái méi sǐ xīn a?
Jack:

        You still haven’t given up?

Děngzhe qiáo ba, tā yídìng huì jiēshòu wǒ de.

Just wait and see. She will surely accept me in the end.

Analysis:

The phrase死心 (sǐ xīn)” means to let one’s heart die literally. But it means to give up one’s hope for good or to think no more of something when people use it in daily life. You can also say “死了心 (sǐ le xīn)” or “死了这条心 (sǐ le zhè tiáo xīn)” to express the same meaning.

Examples:

Wǒ wánquán méiyǒu huìhuà tiānfù, wǒ xiànzài chèdǐ sǐ xīn le.

I have no talent for painting. I have given give it up completely.

Bié fàngqì, nà kě shì nǐ de mèngxiǎng a.

Don’t do that; it is your dream.

Tā shì bù kěnéng lái de, nǐ háishì sǐ le zhè tiáo xīn ba.

He certainly won’t come. You should stop thinking about him.
