Mini-Test Answer: She will have a surprise for her mother.

May. 10, 2012

Beginner Level 初级 (chūjí)

The right answer for the quiz is B.

Translation:

Nǐ zhǔnbèi gěi māma sòng shénme lǐwù?
Ann: 你准备       给   妈妈     送    什么     礼物?

What kind of gift are you going to get for your mother?

Bú gàosu nǐ, wǒ yào gěi tā ge jīngxǐ.
 Jen: 不   告诉  你,我要    给 她个 惊喜。

It is a secret, and I want to give her a surprise.

Analysis:

“给…惊喜 (gěi…jīngxǐ)” is often used in oral Chinese. “给 (gěi)” means to give and “惊喜 (jīngxǐ)” means “surprise.” It uses the sentence structure “给+sb+sth,” meaning to give somebody a surprise. In this case the word “惊喜 (jīng xǐ)” is a noun, but it can also be used as an adjective in the sentence structure “…令人惊喜的 (lìng rén jīngxǐde)…” In this case it means that something is surprising.”

Examples:

Xià ge zhōumò wǒ nǚ péngyou guò shēngrì, wǒ yídìng yào gěi tā yí ge jīngxǐ.
下   个  周末      我 女 朋友         过     生日,我   一定    要   给她一 个惊喜。

Next weekend is my girlfriend’s birthday and I will be sure to give her a surprise.

Zhè zhēn shì yí jiàn lìng rén jīngxǐ de shì.
这     真    是   一件   令    人  惊喜 的 事。

This is a really surprising thing.
