Nov. 23, 2011

Beginner Level 初级 (chūjí)

The correct answer for this quiz is B.

 Translation:

           Láibùjí le, mòbānchē zǒu le.
Anne: 来不及了,末班车       走 了 。

It’s too late. The last bus has gone.

Āi, yòu děi dǎchē huíjiā le.
 Tina: 哎,又  得   打车   回家 了。

Oh, we have to take a taxi to go home again.

 Analysis:

“来不及 (láibùjí)” is a widely used phrase in China. “来 (lái)” means to come; “不 ()” means not and “及 ()” means to reach. The phrase means “there is not enough time/it’s too late (to do sth).” You can use it when there is not enough time for you to do something; it is too late for you to do something; you are too busy with your own work to take care of something; or you are not ready to do something.

Examples:

Xiànzài cái shuō nǐ ài wǒ, yǐjīng láibùjí le.
现在      才   说   你爱 我,已经来不及了。

It’s too late to say you love me now.

Wǒ měitiān gōngzuò dōu láibùjí, nǎ yǒu shíjiān shàngwǎng liáotiān.
我     每天        工作    都 来不及,哪 有   时间      上网           聊天。

I am engaged with my work every day and have no time to chat online.

Wǒ hái láibùjí zhǔnbèi jiù yǐjīng bèi diǎnmíng shàng tái yánjiǎng le.
我   还  来不及  准备     就 已经  被    点名        上     台    演讲    了。

I’m not ready but have been called to make a speech on stage.
