Mini-Test Answer: 吧 (ba)

Jun. 14, 2012

Beginner Level 初级 (chūjí)

The right answer for this test is A.

Translation:

          Wǒmen qù Bālí ba!
Anne: 我们      去 巴黎吧!

          Let’s go to Paris!

          Hǎo zhǔyi.
  Jim: 好    主意。

         Good idea.

Analysis:

Both “吧” and “呢” are modal particle words. “吧” is used to indicate a suggestion or to indicate a supposition.
For example,
Wǒmen qù kàn diànyǐng ba!
我们       去   看     电影   吧!

Let’s watch a movie.

Nǐ shì Lǐ xiānsheng ba!
你 是李   先生        吧!

You must be Mr. Li!

“呢” is used to indicate a question and soften the tone of the sentence.
For example,
Nǐ wèishénme méiyǒu lái ne?
你 为什么          没有   来 呢?

Why don’t you come?

“啊” is a particle word generally used at the end of the sentence to express the tone of strong feelings; in English we might express the same with “wow.”
For example,
Zhèlǐ kě zhēn měi a!
这里 可   真    美 啊!

It’s so beautiful here!
