The major earthquake that recently devastated Japan has captured the world’s attention. It was the largest earthquake on record since the great earthquake in 2008 in China’s Sichuan province. The epicenter of the earthquake that struck Japan a few weeks ago was in the ocean, and this caused a great tsunami. Many people died and were injured, and it is estimated that the monetary damage will total at least several hundred billion dollars. The Chinese government has sent its most sincere condolences and hopes that Japan will be able to recover from this disaster as rapidly as possible.
The Chinese Red Cross also showed grave concern and took action to help the Japanese people. There are a variety of ways for Chinese people to “捐款 (juānkuǎn) donate” through the Chinese Red Cross. Just as with the Sichuan earthquake in China, people around the world are “祈福 (qífú) praying” for the people who are suffering from the earthquake. The world hopes they will overcome their hardship and be able to start new lives.
