Answers to Learning Chinese Words – “靠近 (kàojìn)”, “旁边 (pángbiān)” and “附近(fùjìn)”

Dec. 31, 2014

Correct Answer: A

In the Chinese language, all three words – “靠近 (kàojìn),” “旁边 (pángbiān)” and “附近 (fùjìn)” – express the meaning “next to” or “near by.” But the usage of each is quite different.

“靠近 (kàojìn)”

In Chinese, “靠近 (kàojìn)” is usually used as a verb to indicate the location of something, and means “to be close to,” or “near.” For example, “靠近停车场 (kàojìn tíngchē chǎng) be close to the parking lot,” “靠近邮局 (kàojìn yóujú) near the post office,” or “靠近大海 (kàojìn dàhǎi) to be close to the sea.”

The structure is A + “靠近 (kàojìn)” + B

Examples

Wáng Míng:   Tīngshuō nǐ bānjiā le.
王           明: 听说        你 搬家 了。
Wang Ming: I heard that you moved to a new house.

Lily:  Shìde. Wǒ jiā kàojìn dìtiě,   shàngbān hěn fāngbiàn.
Lily:是的。 我  家 靠近    地铁,上班          很   方便。
Lily: Yes. My house is near the subway, which is very convenient for me to go to work.

Bruce:  Nǐ zài nǎlǐ shàngbān?
Bruce:你 在 哪里 上班?
Bruce: Where do you work?

Liú Fāng: Wǒ zài yīyuàn shàngbān, kàojìn bǎihuò dàlóu.
刘      芳:我   在 医院     上班,       靠近    百货     大楼。
Liu Fang: I work in the hospital, which is close to the departme.

“旁边 (pángbiān)” and “附近 (fùjìn)”

Although, “旁边 (pángbiān)” and “附近 (fùjìn)” have a similar meaning to “靠近(kàojìn),” they should not be used as verbs.

Subject + “给(gěi)” + … + Verb

“旁边 (pángbiān)” and “附近 (fùjìn)” can be used as adjectives. For example, “旁边的房间 (pángbiān de fángjiān) the rooms near by,” and “附近的工厂(fùjìn de gōngchǎng) the factory near by.”

Examples

Nǐ pángbiān de rén shì shéi?
你  旁边        的 人   是  谁?
Who is the person next to you?

Linda:  Jīntiān tài lèi le!
Linda:今天    太 累 了!
Linda: I’m so tired today!

Zhāng Wěi: Nǐ  kěyǐ qù fùjìn de kāfēi tīng xiūxi yíxià.
张         伟:你 可以 去 附近 的 咖啡  厅    休息 一下。
Zhang Wei: You can have a rest in the coffee shop near by.

Additionally, “旁边 (pángbiān)” and “附近 (fùjìn)” can be used as nouns. First, they can be used independently.

Examples

Zhè shì Jack niánqīng shí de zhàopiàn, pángbiān shì tā de qīzǐ.
这    是  Jack 年轻        时  的 照片,      旁边          是  他 的 妻子。?
This is the picture of Jack when he was young, and the woman next to him is his wife.

Qǐngwèn fùjìn yǒu lǚguǎn ma?
请问        附近 有   旅馆     吗?
Excuse me. Are there any hotels near by?

Second, “旁边 (pángbiān)” and “附近 (fùjìn)” can be used with other nouns to indicate “next to something or somebody.”

The structure is: Noun + 的(de) + 旁边(pángbiān) / 附近(fùjìn)

Examples

Wǒmen gōngsī de pángbiān yǒu yìjiā shūdiàn.
我们      公司     的  旁边        有   一家 书店。
There is a bookstore next to our company.

Wǒ zài diànyǐngyuàn fùjìn,   nǐ zài nǎr?
我   在  电影院           附近,你 在 哪儿?
I’m near the cinema. Where are you?

Although, “旁边(pángbiān)” and “附近(fùjìn)” share the same usage and a similar meaning, in reference to distance, “旁边 (pángbiān)” expresses a shorter distance than “附近 (fùjìn).”

In our test, the sentence given means, “my house is next to the park.” This sentence lacks a verb. So the answer is A.
