AP Sample Test Answer: Birthday Gift

Tom says: “This gift is for your birthday, do you like it?”

How should Mary respond to the question?

A. “我要去参加朋友的生日 (Wǒ yào qù cānjiā péngyou de shēngrì)” means “I will
take part in my friend’s birthday party.”

Obviously, this sentence does not answer the question at all.

B. “我很喜欢,谢谢 (Wǒ hěn xǐhuan, xièxiè)” means “I like it very much.”

If some one asks you “喜欢吗 (xǐhuan ma) do you like it,” the proper answer should
      be “我很喜欢,谢谢. ”

C. “对不起,我不知道你过生日 (Duìbùqǐ, wǒ bù zhīdào nǐ guò shēngrì)” means
“Sorry, I don’t know that your birthday is coming.”
D. “这是谁送的礼物 (Zhè shì shuí sòng de lǐwù)” means “Who sends me this
      gift?”

The correct answer is B.
Analysis:

When asked “喜欢吗,” You can answer in two ways: “喜欢 (xǐhuan) like” or “不喜欢 (bù xǐhuan) dislike.” And you may also say “谢谢 (xièxiè) thank you” to show your appreciation.

  1. The proper way is to show your thankfulness by speaking Chinese words: “谢谢你.” You can also tell that person you love the gift very much by saying “我很喜欢你的礼物.”

  2. Then I guess if someone invites me to his birthday party, I can say “谢谢,我很喜欢去.” Am I right?
