When “息 (xī)” is used as a noun, it means “interest”, normally matched with “利 (lì)”, hence “利息 (lìxī) interest”, and it also means “news”, hence “消息 (xiāoxī) message”.
When “息 (xī)” is used as a verb, it means to rest, hence “休息 (xiūxī) rest”, or it means to cease, such as words like “息怒 (xīnù) cease being angry”.
