Answer to Far, Far Away: Describing Distance with “离(lí)” and “从(cóng)”

Apr. 13, 2015

Correct Answer: A

If you want to describe the distance between two places, you can use “离()” and “从(cóng),” but the ways they are used differ from one another.

If you want to use “离(),” you can employ the following structure:

Structure One: Place 1 + 离() + Place2 + 远(yuǎn)/近(jìn)

Běijīng lí Shànghǎi hěn yuǎn.
Beijing is far from Shanghai.

Jim jiā  lí dàhǎi hěn jìn.
Jim
Jim’s house is close to the sea!

Nǐ jiā lí gōngsī yuǎn ma?
Is your house far away from the company?

If you want to use “从(cóng)” to express distance, you can use the following structure:

Structure Two: 从(cóng)+ Place 1 + 到(dào) + Place 2 + 远(yuǎn)/近(jìn)

Cóng huāyuán dào shāngdiàn bù yuǎn.
It is not far from the garden to the shop.

Cóng yīyuàn dào yóujú hěn jìn.
The distance from the hospital to the post office is short.

Cóng nǐ jiā dào huǒchēzhàn yuǎn ma?
Is it far from your house to the train station?
