Answer Key – HSK Quiz: Bānɡ mánɡ (帮忙) VS Bānɡ zhù (帮助)

Analysis:
Wǒ xiàn zài xū yào yí ɡè bānɡ mánɡ de rén , nǐ kě yǐ bānɡ zhù wǒ mɑ ?
我    现   在 需   要 一 个   帮      忙     的 人 ,你可以   帮    助   我  吗 ?
I need a hand (someone who can help me) now. Can you help me?

Bānɡ mánɡ (帮忙) is normally used as a noun in Chinese. We can say “bāng máng de rén” (帮忙的人): a person who helps someone to do something/a helper; and we can also say “bāng yī gè máng” (帮一个忙): do somebody a favor.

Bānɡ zhù (帮助), on the other hand, can be either a noun or a verb. When it’s used as a noun, it is interchangeable with bānɡ mánɡ (帮忙). For example: Wǒ xū yào bāng zhù/bāng máng (我需要帮助/帮忙): I need help; when it’s used as a verb, it can be followed with an object directly.
