Many learners feel stuck even as their vocabulary grows. You understand more, but speaking still feels difficult. The problem is not how many words you know. It is how you use them. There Isn’t Just One Way to Speak Chinese. Speaking Chinese is not a single skill. It develops in stages.
Most learners move through three types of speaking systems:
- Basic Conversational System
- Structured Speaking System
- Adaptive Speaking System
Each one solves a different problem. Real progress happens when you move from one to the next.
1. Basic Conversational System
Staying in the conversation
At this stage, the goal is not perfect expression. The goal is to keep speaking without freezing.
This system uses short, flexible pieces that allow you to respond quickly.
Core features
- Short responses
- Incomplete but natural sentences
- Built while speaking, not planned in advance
Example 1
Nǐ juéde zhège dìfāng zěnmeyàng?
你觉得这个地方怎么样?
What do you think of this place?
Hái kěyǐ ba… jiùshì yǒudiǎn yuǎn.
还可以吧…就是有点远。
It’s okay… it’s just a bit far.
Example 2
Nǐ jīntiān máng ma?
你今天忙吗?
Are you busy today?
Yǒudiǎn ba… xiàwǔ hái yǒu huì.
有点吧…下午还有会。
A little bit… I have a meeting this afternoon.
Example 3
Zhè jiā cāntīng zěnmeyàng?
这家餐厅怎么样?
How is this restaurant?
Hái kěyǐ… jiùshì yǒudiǎn guì.
还可以…就是有点贵。
It’s okay… it’s just a bit expensive.

What this system solves
- Reduces silence
- Helps you respond faster
- Keeps conversations going
Limitation
If you stay at this level, your speech may sound simple and lack depth.
2. Structured Speaking System
Explaining your ideas clearly
At this stage, you move beyond reacting. You begin to organize and develop ideas. Instead of short comments, you give reasons and structure your thinking.
Core features
- Clear logic
- Connected ideas
- More complete responses
Example 1
Nǐ wèishénme xǐhuan zhège gōngzuò?
你为什么喜欢这个工作?
Why do you like this job?
Wǒ juéde zhǔyào shì lí jiā jìn, érqiě gōngzuò yālì yě bù tài dà.
我觉得主要是离家近,而且工作压力也不太大。
I think mainly it’s close to home, and also the work pressure isn’t too high.
Example 2
Zhège dìfāng zěnmeyàng?
这个地方怎么样?
How is this place?
Yī fāngmiàn huánjìng hěn hǎo, dànshì jiāotōng bù tài fāngbiàn.
一方面环境很好,但是交通不太方便。
On one hand, the environment is very good, but the transportation isn’t very convenient.
Example 3
Nǐ juéde zhè jiàn shì zěnmeyàng?
你觉得这件事怎么样?
What do you think about this matter?
Wǒ juéde yǒu yōudiǎn, dànshì yě yǒu yīxiē wèntí.
我觉得有优点,但是也有一些问题。
I think there are strengths, but there are also some issues.

What this system solves
- Makes your ideas clearer
- Helps you sound more thoughtful
- Increases confidence in longer conversations
Limitation
Without flexibility, speech can become slow or overly structured.
3. Adaptive Speaking System
Adjusting to real situations
At advanced levels, speaking is not just about what you say, but how you say it. This system allows you to adjust tone, soften opinions, and respond appropriately in different social contexts.
Core features
- Flexible tone
- Indirect expression when needed
- Awareness of context and relationship
Example 1
Zhège fāng’àn zěnmeyàng?
这个方案怎么样?
How is this plan?
Direct:
Bù tài hǎo.
不太好。
Not so good.
Adaptive:
Kěnéng hái yǒu yīdiǎn kěyǐ yōuhuà de dìfāng.
可能还有一点可以优化的地方。
There might still be a few aspects that can be improved.
Example 2
Nǐ juéde zhè jiàn shì róngyì ma?
你觉得这件事容易吗?
Do you think this matter is easy?
Bù tài hǎo shuō… yào kàn jùtǐ qíngkuàng.
不太好说…要看具体情况。
Hard to say… it depends on the specific situation.
Example 3
Nǐ yào bú yào qù?
你要不要去?
Do you want to go?
Wǒ xiǎng yíxià ba… kěnéng zhè cì bú tài fāngbiàn.
我想一下吧…可能这次不太方便。
Let me think about it… maybe this time it’s not very convenient.
Useful expressions

不太好说…
Hard to say…
Kěnéng…

Maybe…
Yào kàn qíngkuàng…
要看情况…
It depends…
What this system solves
- Makes your speech more natural
- Helps you handle sensitive situations
- Improves real-life communication quality
From Words to Systems
Fluency is not about using more words. It is about using the right system at the right time.
Many learners stay stuck not because they are not working hard, but because they are practicing the wrong layer. They may keep memorizing vocabulary when what they really need is flexibility, or focus on perfect sentences when they need real-time response skills.
At eChineseLearning, we focus on helping you build all three speaking systems step by step.
Instead of only teaching vocabulary or grammar, our lessons are designed to help you:
- move from short, reactive answers to more complete and structured responses
- learn how to organize ideas clearly in Chinese
- adjust your tone and expression based on real-life situations
- stay in conversations even when you are unsure what to say
Each lesson is personalized. Your teacher identifies which speaking system you are currently using and where the gap is, then guides you with targeted practice, real conversation scenarios, and immediate feedback. You are not just learning what to say. You are learning how to speak.
You can start with a free trial lesson, where a professional teacher will assess your current speaking ability, show you how your responses can be improved, and introduce a learning path tailored to your goals. With the right system in place, speaking Chinese becomes less about hesitation and more about control.
