Most Chinese cities were named after their location next to mountains, rivers or the sea. For example, 洛阳 Luoyang is named for its location on the side of the 洛水 (Luo River) and 上海 Shanghai, which simply means “upon sea”. In the case of 北京 Beijing and 南京 Nanjing both were renamed, or celebrated, with the title that includes “京 (Jing)”, or “capital” city.
